Teenage singer a hit with fans

By NG SU-ANN

FRESH school leaver Razaleigh Md Zain may be a novice at performing on stage but he certainly has no problems attracting screaming fans.

The 17-year-old with his cleancut boyish looks became an instant hit with the audience at the finals of the High School Musical (HSM) singing contest organised by Queensbay Mall, Penang, on Sunday.

Singing ‘Everyday’ from the HSM sequel, he not only charmed the crowd but also the judges who later declared him the winner in the open category.

“This is my first time taking part in a singing contest and I simply sang from my heart.

“While waiting for my SPM results, I’m working at the Baskin Robbins outlet in Queensbay Mall.

“So the only time I practised was when I sang to my colleagues and manager,” he said.

Razaleigh, who aspires to be a deejay, won RM1,000 cash vouchers, a handphone sponsored by Celcom and a CD recording of his winning song.

The second prize winners were Carinn Khoo and Jorinn Chee while the third prize winner was Michelle Chang Wen Nee. They won RM900 and RM600 cash vouchers respectively.

In the Under-12 category, cousins Nor Sabrina Shek Daud, 10, and Nur Lydia Hudayattullah, 11, won first prize with their duet ‘You are the music in me’.

“It took us about a week to practise for the contest. We also did our own choreography,” they said.

They won RM800 shopping vouchers, a CD of their winning performance and a handphone.

The second prize winners were cousins, Aymanul Hakiem Lockman and Sofea Nur Anna Ridzuan Effendy, while the third prize winner was Beatrice Chew Chien Han.

They received RM500 and RM300 respectively.

The mall’s public relations and events manager Boon Swan Mee presented the prizes to the winners.

The contest was part of the mall’s High School Musical (HSM) month.
